Honoring the Inner Valentine: Make Your Ace of Cups

February 14, Noon to 2 pm PST over zoom / $28

Heart’s Compass Tarot, my workbook published by Two Fine Crows Book, turns a year old on Valentine's Day! What a beautiful year—the workbook provided a blueprint for classes and wonderful events all year long, a number of which you can enjoy as recorded presentations on the Heart’s Compass You-Tube channel including Tarot for Memoir, Poets of Heart’s Compass, Tarot for Two and more.

I invite you to join me this Valentine’s Day for a 2-hour offering, Honoring the Inner Valentine, Make Your Ace of Cups, held over zoom from Noon to 2 pm PST. Feel free to use the contact form on my blog to drop me a line and I’ll send you the zoom and payment links.

While Valentine’s Day often focuses on “lovers love,” I am so very excited to start this new yearly tradition of making a tarot Ace of Cups card alongside other kindred tarot lovers and tarot curious seekers in community in tribute to the inner heart, the Inner Valentine, every February 14. And in tribute to Heart’s Compass Tarot’s birthday!

If you only make one tarot card from the deck in your lifetime, I say, let it begin with love—the Ace of Cups, card of the heart. Whether you’ve been working your way through the Heart’s Compass Tarot workbook on your own or you are new to tarot and the Ace of Cups, you are welcome to join us for a loving and lively midday exploration.

In this 2-hour workshop we will:

·      Look at some beautiful examples of Ace of Cups tarot cards from a variety of decks

·      Reflect, write, and share about our own particular heart-joys and future heart-wishes using a tarot journaling method

·      Begin to make our own Ace of Cups card based on personal heart’s desires

To register: Use the contact form on my site to drop me a line to let me know you wish to join. You’ll receive instructions for what to bring to class, our zoom invite, and payment options. Honoring the Inner Valentine: Make Your Ace of Cups meets on February 14, Noon PST-2 pm on zoom. Course cost: $28. All level of tarot lover welcome, from the tarot curious to the tarot savvy.

Why Make an Ace of Cups?

This is the Ace of Cups I made back in 2016 alongside my students, as they created their own versions of the cards that would go on to grace the pages of the Heart's Compass Tarot workbook (Carrie’s Ace of Depths appears in the graphic at the top of this post; Lisa’s Ace of Cups depicts the set of hands cupping the heart cup; in the middle is an in-process Ace of Cups I started on a roadtrip). I wrote the following Haiku to accompany this birdlike, fiery, sky Ace of Cups:

Self-love’s Ace of Cups

Egret lands, folds outstretched wings

Heart rests between flights

As I drew the image of the bird, I felt consciously connected to the blues and lavendars, sensing into the heart and the element of water. I live across from the sea; pastel sunrise skies, egrets, seagulls, pelicans, osprey, sandpipers, and hummingbirds all form my dayscapes. I often wake to the cry of the osprey. I often see the setting sun slipping down behind the ocean’s horizon line. It makes sense that birdwings and sunset colors found their way into that original Ace of Cups.

I also remember being surprised a bit by the reds and yellows, and the angular, jagged lines emanating from the sunlike orb.  But I also remember it just felt right in my heart of hearts. Allowing myself to immerse in color play, to start with the softer colors, allowed me to reach deeper. I love these reds as much as the blues, for the card ends up reflecting back to me a representation of the complexity and richness of emotions from soft love to the core red surges of anger that also call for expression at the heartline. I colored my way to a type of recognition, a permission to feel a full range of feelings, expressed in a few lines from the workbook:

I allow my heart the full range of emotions

From volcanic core to seed-bursting as the sun

I invite my heart’s waves from swell

To dissolving into the larger sea

I made my Ace as a mirror of my heart at that time. I am eager to drop into the present and see what I find there now, for I have changed, and oh, how the world has changed, for all of us. I look forward to discovering what you find in your heart's mirror. Come color, paint, sketch, collage--you name it--beside me. Tarot blessings!

Tarot Dreamers: Make Your Tarot Deck Course 2: The High Priestess and her Gifts

I’m so proud and pleased to continue to offer Tarot Deck Making classes…we are having a beautiful time delving into our own symbol worlds right now. We are in the midst of making the Magician’s Aces. The process has been richer than I’d imagined as we explore how to translate the larger ideas behind each card into a vision card that works for each one of us given our unique histories and unique set of goals we hold dear for our future.

Here's my in process Ace of Disks, the self poised mid-tree, learning to connect to sun in sky and the core sun in center of the earth through the internal sun or heartline in order to accept the role of body as a filament of sorts. By that I mean a filament or flame inside of a lantern, giving off light for the self to better see where next to step on the path fully grounded, secure, rooted, learning from the trees.

Want to step in and join us? Our process repeats in each course—exploring our relationship to the past, present, and future in relation to our dreams and the cards. The assignment of Major Arcanum card--our focus of Major and corresponding minor cards--is what changes.

The next six-week online course features the High Priestess. We start on November 7 and end on December 16. By completion of this course, we will have drafted a Major Arcanum vision card for the High Priestess and for her corresponding Minor Mentor cards: the Two of Cups, Two of Disks, Two of Swords, and Two of Wands.

Course Cost is $300. Course communication will take place over a combination of email, Zoom, and private online discussion forum. Prompts, feedback, forum, and Zoom provided; participants are responsible for materials for the art form they choose to practice for the duration of the course. To sign up, contact me through my contact page or visit my Wheel of Archetypal Selves Facebook Page.

*I’m sure I will offer the full series more than once, so please don’t worry if you miss a particular six-week course.

A note of gratitude:

As I worked on my Ace of Disks card, I listened to a beautiful meditation by Tee Ming of the School of Flow. The name of the meditation is: "Money Tree for Soul Sourced Prosperity." I wanted to thank Tee Ming for the view of her beautiful garden and her words.

November Butterfly Poetry Prompts

In an effort to make November Butterfly useful to both writers of poetry and teachers of poetry, I’ve worked with Saddle Road Press to create writing prompts corresponding to thirteen of the poems in the collection.

We are offering the poetry collection itself as a Kindle for $4.99; when you purchase the Kindle version, I will send  you a free 15 page PDF, Thirteen Writing Prompts Based on the Power and Creativity of Iconic Women Designed to Help You Write New Work from Multiple Points of View. It is packed with visuals from the poetry movies, writing prompts and links to other resources to extend your understanding of persona poetry. For more information, read this post.

Tarot for Two

The Hermit fell for Mary last month; she beautifully connects the Hermit’s lantern to her ongoing work with EMDR.

Mary writes:

The face of the Hermit is featureless, turning to the side, and the hand is holding a diamond-shaped crystal lamp that contains a small glowing sun.  It’s that sun inside that little lamp, held by the hand in the rough center of the card, that seems to be the focal point of the card, and it was that lamp that I saw during the vision I had this month.

On my end, I struggled with having pulled the Seven of Swords. So I took a second card and was thrilled to pull The Wheel of Fortune. I write about both of my cards in the context of choosing to raise my children and work from home and the consequences of that decision as reflected in a soberingly low Social Security Statement.

Tania writes:

My poet friend said, “You take a pen to that Social Security statement: Next to all those so-called zeros, you write in what you were doing all those years! All those hours of time with your children! Make up your own Social Security statement. You’ve been investing in creating socially creative and responsible adults.”

Wheel of Archetypal Selves: The Many Faces of Love

Sea Queen of Hearts
In this on-line Tarot Writing course, we will explore Tarot’s many faces of love including Self-Love, Friendship’s Gift of Love, Love Between Lovers, Royal Marriage, Spiritual Marriage, and The Alchemy of Love/Art. Approaching the Tarot from a relaxed, open-hearted stance, we will explore how the cards inspire us to understand and reflect upon our experiences as a soul traveler passing through the various stages of love.

We will write to connect past experiences to aspects of each card as well as answering weekly questions based on definitions assigned the cards by Tarot scholars. We will read excerpts of published work based on the Tarot and keep a Tarot Journal for the duration of the course, noting any experiential synchronicities occurring during the week in relation to the cards under study.

In addition to sharing weekly free-writes and exercises, students are encouraged to work towards one or more polished pieces of writing in the genres of their choice (poetry, flash fiction, essay, memoir, monologue, etc.) to share with us by week six.

By the end of this class, students will gain a working knowledge of The Ace of Cups, Two of Cups, The Emperor/Empress pairing, the High Priestess/Hierophant pairing, and The Temperance or Art card. This class is open to all level of writer; no prior experience needed in working with the Tarot. Images from a variety of Tarot decks will be provided weekly (including Roots of Asia, Poet Tarot, Rider-Waite, Thoth, Motherpeace, Daughters of the Moon, Voyager, and more).

This six week on-line course starts February 15 and ends on March 25, 2016. Cost is $250. Course communication will take place over a combination of email, Zoom, and private online discussion forum. For more information or to sign up, email me through my contact page or visit The Wheel of Archetypal Selves Tarot Facebook page to message me there.
